Finally, an affordable CD Transport: the Shigaclone story

I'd like to know on which capacitor I can switch from polarized to non-polarized capacitor or where I can parallel a non-polar to a polarized one.

If you have a link as a good resource that would help also as to learn the difference between a polar and NP cap and how to implement them in a circuits, I'm not too comfortable with NP in DC circuits.

Any cap will work fine, polarized or non polarized, as long as voltage rating is suitable

Hello :)

Anybody know if it's possible to buy only CD-06 mechanics & control board ?

You can't buy control board separately, if you want to fix it, you need new boombox (or new chip)

because I worked on my new shigaclone version when I was very tired and I invert the polarity of the capacitor and blow my chip :(

thanks in advance ;) !

Hi Nick

theres a mechanism here same as Shiga mechanism
(optic + pcb optic, 2 CD motor )
price US$ 10 not include shipping (maybe US$ 10 too)
some people buy from me, they try and works too

pm me if you still interested

For the ones who are interested I am (re)building a NOS dac to match the Shigaclone transport ( a bit like an oversized DAC 3 Audionote).

Sorry it is all in dutch but a lot of photo's...:)

Erik Congrats for the nice work as always.
Now here is the question!!

How on earth did you bend that thick copper ???? i am trying something with less thick and for a moment i though i was iron man in the cave.

Nick

One of my clients is ABB Systems so an industrial bending machine
you do not want to park your car too close to those kind of machines if you know what I mean...

Which SF-P101N embedded in a EZ51 ?

Hello Shigacloners

I just bought a RC-EZ51 from eBay. Since they don't ship overseas, I drop shipped to a UK friend's home. Hence, I will get the boombox in some weeks. In order to begin the mechanical work (which I suppose is by far the hardest part), I would like to buy a bare SF-101N transport which can be found for very cheap.

My question : in which flavour cames the SF-P101N transport in a EZ51 ? 15 pins or 16 pins ?

BTW whenever someone has a drawing of a mechanical plinth it would help me a lot. I saw wonderful realisations while browsing this thread.

TIA for your help, best regards.

Another Shigaclone lives

Hi,
I found this thread late and finally found a ez 31 on amazon. They are not available here in the states. It must have been a return because it came without the remote, manual, cord or original box. I have started the process of converting it into a transport. So far so good. It plays discs with the new 8v ps and sounds ok. Spdif out into my TPA Buffalo dac. It would lock without any resistors on the DO but made clicking sounds like it was trying to unlock. A 285 and a 100 ohm resistor and no more clicking sounds. I am still waiting for caps from Reference Audio Mods (rubycon za) to replace the necessary caps as per the pdf. I still need to remove the smd on the board. I think I will buy a smaller solder iron. Bass isnt very full at this point but I will do the rest of the mods soon and I hope that will help. Its only played 4 cds so far so it needs to burn in still. I am comparing it to a Esoteric P-10. Would anyone have a remote they can spare? I tried to use my harmony remote but none of the codes will control the jvc. Thanks to all for the great info and answers to all the questions. There are some beautiful player being built here. :D

As caps, you should also consider Elna Simic II. These are the final ones that will be using in my PSU. They were definetly fuller in bass than the Panasonic FC's and less hard and grainy. Got also way more micro details, slightly less intimate (bit further soundstage) but more 3d spacialisation.

Hint: To remove the smd's, use the help of solder paste, it goes fast and clean. My experience without paste when using solder wick isn't very good.

Hi Bikerboy,
The mechanical considerations Peter described in the early part of this thread oddly enough have a very large part to do with the overall sound. I would read that part of the thread carefully and get the required materials from online metals.

The blackgates are particularly worth while in the power supply of these things and a few other critical locations.

shigy mods

I removed the sm caps as per the pdf and wow. Much better bass and the top end really opened up. Installed new caps except left the stock crystal and c906. It still plays after all that!:D Horray! Sounds really good now. Can play Thievery Corps new cd-Radio Retaliation or Led Zepllin-Physical Graffiti and am very happy with the bass guitar and drums. I am going to listen to it for a while then install the crystal. I will try to find the Black Gates but they are scarce. I need to design the case now. This now sounds like a transport I will happy with for a long time. Any one have a remote or another complete unit they dont need? I'll take it!

The batteries are excellent.I even use it for tube heating (150Ah for two 6n6pi DAC output tubes). But this is a matter of taste I think.I use them for years since don't have money for super regulators which should be even better but too much money for five (DAC+transport) supplies.I like batteries because it's easier to hear the difference between various LM317 chips. After swapping various types I am on LM317HVH.They are most detailed among 317 I tried. Also I use transformers secondaries as energy storage before regulators and only 80microF MKP motor run capacitors on input pin and don't have bass problems just cleaner. But check yourself because I have Magneplanars and I am not a sub type.People who are used to listen to dynamic speakers are sitting for hours and enjoy without any complain regarding bass quantity only notifying superb transparency. You must try yourself first.7Ah battery cost around 20 Eur in my local shop so you can try it for not so much money. You must try motor MKP before regulator(another 10Eur) because after putted it in PSU I don't listen electrolytics except in power amps for practical reasons.I even changed capacitors in tube PSU for MKP.I have used Rubycons but never tried Blackgates(hard to find , too much money etc.)
So there is no precise answer to batteries or not.Maybe Black gates do miracle but Ac always sound too dirty for me to test them and as I am satisfied with batteries don't want to digging any more. Try them yourself.Bye elco+AC in my case.Another detail ,bigger Ah value lower the battery output Z -better soud.
