Finally, an affordable CD Transport: the Shigaclone story

Hi uncle Leon, Thanks for the reply. I recently discovered bing AI , its perfect for letting it search forums and sum up the posts that are made. Already gathered some crucial information already, but not all ;-) Its amazing what this little transport can sound like when adding a clock and doing some basic mods. Some years ago I started it, but never finished it. So its a project on rivive :)

It's an amazing project to be sure and I'm glad that it's still alive.
I would advise caution with AI though. They are constantly improving but a while back I asked ChatGPT to describe Shigaclone project based on the diyaudio forums and it gave me some fundamentally wrong facts in the answer, such as that it uses Philips CD-PRO2LF transport. It is best to ask AI to provide a direct link to the source, or perhaps instruct it to quote the relevant posts verbatim, just to be sure.

"an affordable CD Transport".

I understand that some may find this awkward, but it's not said to wind others up. Having a range of CD players (that can be used as just a transport), and some conventional CD transports, many of which have readily available (even today) mechs or have mechs that last as long as the sun. What is the attraction, (or ever was) of using parts from a low end boom box that history said would only be in production for a short time, that does not have suitable casework, PSU, user interface, or supporting electronics etc?

I don't get it.

I would say though that not having read all of the thread, I can see that there is clearly some wonderful, world class work here. I just wonder how it would have improved an already "OK" factory made unit.

Is this possibly the jumping off point for another thread on such a topic? "Making a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

As I said, this question is not asked so as to offend.

Your attitude is understandable, however this is precisely what this project is: a world class CD transport, made with components scavenged from a boombox. However, it's not just any boombox, and not just any modifications that make it work. And work it does, let me make this clear - some of the best implementations are only rivalled by the likes of CEC TL0. Hence the incredible popularity of this thread.

This was all based on a particular board, which is no longer available from any new boombox, and the original only rarely crops up on ebay. There was also a project to make our own, improved board, led by the user tvicol, but the group buy is over, and I'm not sure if he has any left for sale. Picking apart a random boombox and making a CD transport out of that will yield mediocre results at best, as expected.

I have built two of these just out of curiosity. Yes, I still have 1500 CDs for when I don't want streaming music.

One item I don't believe was ever addressed in the thread that I considered critical to these JVC Boom boxes is the proprietary error correcting chip on the board. This would be essential for a higher end boom box to function in its environment without skipping. Does anyone remember if this was ever discussed in this thread?

To decide if it's a world class or not one has to be intimately familiar with world class units. These cost $10k and up. Somehow, I doubt there are many here who have that experience.
Streamers and thumb drives are fine but most of them won't come close to world class traditional CD playback-yet. They just may be good enough.

The thread has 9000 posts.
Anybody else replaced their Spectrals, Goldmunds, Metronome, DCS, Audio Note pieces with Shiga Clone? So far only two Poles with their third hand CECs are making all the fuss:)
I heard 47 Labs Pi-tracer and it was dreadful. We all expected Jesus to descend from the otherworld.
Their DAC was a dreadful bore as well . Nothing Junji Kimura made was world class but it was priced as high end and made out of tuna cans. Nothing wrong with directing the product to bored to death rich people which try to appear trendy and minimalistic. Now , I may be forced to change my view once I hear world class sound from any chip amp, dac or phonoclone but I don't hold my breath.
