Default Proto (Vero) boards: seeking effective grounding & other tips

Most of my simpler digital (and other) audio projects begin on proto (aka Vero) board. I usaully use the type with copper pads on one side.

For these boards, are there any "best practices" -- or can someone suggest tips on grounding, "powerplaning" and other construction techniques?
