MP3 (Creative Zen) player to USB DAC?

Is it possible to play back music on the new creative zen by connecting the USB wire to an external USB DAC and then on to an amplifier? Of when you hit play on it will it just send the signal to the headphone jack?

And if not is there anything I could use this way? Short of connecting my actual laptop to the USB DAC.

I doubt it. Both are USB devices; you need a USB host to connect them to. One host (typically a PC) can connect to several devices. The Zen's USB drive probably "looks like" an external disk drive to the host.

The only MP3 player I have ever seen that outputs digital audio is the H100 series of players from iRiver. Unfortunately they are no longer available.
