Tubes, and maybe even transformers.
I started a tube project only once. It was a pcssive RIAA network between two tube stages. Got all the parts, didn't finish though.

Hi Peter,
Not that I mind you building a tubed phono preamp, of course... What I had in mind was a circuit for a DAC as in the link you posted, it seems very well thought out and may be a very good alternative to commercial DACs, quite likely at a substantially reduced cost to the DIY builder. After all thermionic bits can't be all that bad? Cheers,
