I've come on a faulty Marantz DD82 (DCC player) and am using it as an offbored DAC for my PC soundcard (PSC706). I like the sound and have herad it recommended by others too.
It's a massive box, with a huge amount of unwanted stuff. I want to pull it all out and rebox it. I've got the schematics and see the DAC bored is indeed small. So my question is, is all I need the DAC bored and PSU out of it? I also can't work out from the diagram where you connect the board to the PSU, and the audio in. I bought the schematics online and most of them are crap quality (amazingly, the DAC page is about the only decent one). Also, I can't find the required voltage (I assume different parts of the player would require different voltages, or would they ALL be the same - allowing me to connect the PSU out straight to the DAC regardless?). How would I find this out, or could I guess, using a reasonable standard (15V maybe?)? Thanks |

In My Opinion and You are not going to like my opinion, but, here goes: Keep the Marantz unit the way it is and use it as your audio DAC until you can get something that will process 24 bit audio ... Don't waste you time trying to rebuild or redesign it.

hmm, ok. What would that be though? Can you recommend any PCBs to buy that will process 24bit?

The DAC chip is probably SAA7350.

If that is indeed the case, the next question is what is the preceding digital filter ?

I would think that it is either SM5840 or SAA7321/2.
From memory, this machine was produced at about the same time as the Marantz CD42/52/72 and the somewhat different CD62. The CD42/52 and CD72 used SM5840 as filter with the SAA7350 as DAC - all on one main PCB. The CD62 used SAA7322 as filter on the main PCB - with SAA7350 as DAC on a separate audio board. They all used SAA7310 as decoder.

Either way, with the addition of a CS8412 or similar, the OP's DCC can be turned into a DAC. Despite its 20 bit limitation, the SAA7350 is still a pretty good device.
