I have a Sony DVP-S7000 - and am quite surprised how good it sounds (although sometimes it doesn't work properly (not sure why)).
In fact it sounds better than my Toshiba SD-9500 which surprised me (for cd playback this is)
is there anyway with the DVP-S7000 to disable the video stages ? It just seems that would help out the audio side of things ?

The S7000 has a completely seperate & linear power supply for the audio stages, and the audio stages are on a separate circuit board. I very seriously doubt that you could hear a difference if you shut down the video. The DVP-S9000ES has this ability, totally shutting down all video circuits at a button push, and I can't hear a difference.
