Default DSP question

hello, I am trying to understand the basics of digital crossovers. Does it go before the dac? After the dac? In between input and output stages?
Do I need a new amplification stage for every crossover I add?
Is it possible to have a digital crossover in the interstage so I don't have to create more input stages?
