ultra analog D20400A dac ideas

Hi Guys
Have a Sonic Frontier SFD 3 dac board which I was thinking of reviving.
Got the schematics but it's smuggy in print. Can't really make out some
details. So am thinking about removing the Dac & to start ground up with
a simple NOS dac. Would this be a difficult task ? Im no good in digital so
will take this as a learning project when time permits.

Thanks

I don't think it would be very difficult at all. The D20400 is a straight DAC (no oversampling on board) and accepts a few different data standards: Offset Binary, 2s Complement, Complementary Offset Binary and Complementary 2s Complement - I don't know what they are precisely but the important thing is that many other chips including the TDA1541 use the same standards so I'd guess you can pick the digital schematics of another NOS design using one of those data standards and drop in the D20400... (whilst asking advice on here to check!).

It accepts 24 bit data with it's own truncation to 20 bit and can run at 400KHz so a NOS should be able to accept up to 24/384 rates via simple I2S?

All the data sheets are available here via a forum member who uploaded them somewhere: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/254748-ultraanalog-d20400-data-i-have-all.html
