A "classic" Philips DAC inside a modern DAP:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

For me an horror ! Too much smd caps equal bad sound : just choice between tantal, tantal-polymer or ceramic... beurk ! Here maybe the layout is good but it lack some bigger caps wirth trough holes to have the choice of more caps !

Is it possible to make a good dac with just 1210 caps cases max ? I don't believe so ! There are excelent caps wit 2 or 3 mm leads pitch !

not all ceramic are alike

NP0/C0G is good - better than silver mica, overlaps some polypropylene in DA specs, measured distortion can be <-140 dB
really beyond human hearing limits by engineering and Psychoacoustics' numbers - you have to put up some properly controlled, blinded listening tests to be credible criticizing NP0/C0G

hi-k ceramic do have limitations for linear signal applications though

....but, you can design a DAC with just a scope imho. At some place (each layout have its limitation) , tantalum can be better than ceramic. Polymer beter than ceramic ans so on !

If it was just a question of smd and noise floor... We would be able to do good DAC 20 years ago !

We really need to stop the designs maid only on the scope with just 3 or 5 harmonics measurements. This way is the minimal but no the end of a good design imho.... as if you choose a complete hifi system with taking all the elements with the lower noise floor no allow you to have a musical system nearer then reallity than some with higher noise floor !

Surprised to have such discussion nowadays !
