Looking for advice on DSPs
Firstly, I note that there is no DSP specific forum area, and hope that this is the right place to post this.
I'm wanting to learn to make a digital crossover, as tbh I don't like the idea of using one without knowing the mathematics behind it, as ideally I'd like to be in control of them (i.e. turn on, off, process, raw process etc)
At this point I'm trying to get my head around how frequencies can be identified and divided up on a mathematical level, using basic mathematical functions (i.e. no strict calculus).
Can anybody point me in the direction of a good textbook/resource?
Will almost everything I do revolve around fourier series or are there other options available?

I'm not going to recommend you a textbook because I don't know how familiar you're with DSP concepts.
What I'd like to recommend is that you pick a platform first. I suppose you want real-time processing. Can be a DSP evaluation board or a programming environment on your PC that connects to your soundcard. Can also be a system based on the Raspberry Pi (like this one: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digit...pberry-pi.html).
I'd say the important first step is that you make sure you get the incoming samples from the input and that you're able to send samples to the output - otherwise you're going to loose your head with readings and miss your goal, which is about achieving something real, right?
It doesn't matter if you don't pick the proper platform for your project in the beginning: what you will learn can be transposed later on any other platform.
Once that you have control over the flow of numbers that represent the samples in your system, you can start implementing the basic blocks: gains and delays.
If you get that far, shout again and I'll help you implementing more complex blocks.
Given nannoo's thinking STFT and is apparently unaware of IIR and FIR filters I suspect most any intro DSP text would be fine. I'm not current on texts but it's easy enough to look up a few courses to see what they're using and check reviews at Amazon or wherever.
Currently available SoCs tend not to be particularly good choices for XO. Details and some low cost embedded alternatives in pages 49 to 55 of this thread. On the PC probably the easiest real-time path would be to reimplement Reaper's ReaEQ plugin. There's plenty of codebases which can be leveraged for that. Cross Time DSP and rePhase are both written by DIYA folks, though pos isn't distributing source.
You might want to consider the PIC DSP.
