Is your usb board powered by the pc, or did you borrow the power from the dac?

I picked up an ak4396 dac kit, and kind of did the same thing. I used I2S output right into the dac chip, bypassing the opamps using only caps on the output.

Yes, the USB board is powered by the PC.

I considered trying to go I2S directly from the CM6631A to the WM8740 but in another thread someone indicated that it would probably not work. I had a plan worked out and everything, but based on that advise, I decided to simply stick with SPDIF.

I'd love to know the details of how you achieved direct I2S.

I2S would be ideal, as it would allow me to bypass the DIR9001 on the DAC board, which limits me to 96/24. Both the CM6631A and the WM8740 are capable of 192/24.

On the other hand, 96/24 is probably way more than I will ever need and it does sound pretty damned incredible as it is, so... "if it ain't broke...."

Hi,

I do not know in details the WM8740, the following schema is for the PCM1794, but maybe it can help you:
DDDAC 1794 NOS DAC - Non Oversampling DAC with PCM1794 - no digital filter - modular design DIY DAC for high resolution audio 192/24 192kHz 24bit
