Default Inexpensive I2S adaptor anywhere?

I have a number of DACs, and also own a few Netgear MP101 audio players.

These do the job just fine when run with the right software, and have a reasonable DAC built-in (an old WM8721). This sounds acceptable but the presentation is bass-light and the overall sound is too laid back for my tastes.

Is there anything available, either by buying in a chipset that's hole-through (not SMD) or available ready-made, that's not expensive, that I could use to tap the I2S input to the DAC and run out to an SPDIF output?

Alternatively, how difficult would wiring in a simple upgrade such as an old TDA1543 or the like be?

Hmmm, should have Googled harder

This looks to be what I need:

MBHP_I2S

*Very* simple circuit as well, could sort that out on a breadboard.

Worth the 1.29 for a 1543, I'll give it a go.
