Default I can't find a good diy DAC kit under $300?

I am a novice, but I'd like to build a DAC instead of buying. I have basic solldering skills. I was planning on buying a dac magic or peachtree audio gs. Something in that range.. but the few kits I have found are pricy. No nice case or power supply even. Also am I saving any money doing diy? $50 bucks doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. And thats without a nice enclosure. Also many dacs seem to be a lot more money.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth it other than fun ofcourse, or point me to some dacs

Thanks

+1 for the 2496 DAC kit. It's great sounding and it's beginner and advanced frendly.

An alternative to AK4393 chip (THD+N = -100dB) is CS4398 (THD+N = -107dB):
CS8416+CS4398 DAC Kit Support USB + coaxial DAC Board | eBay

PS: CS4398 is used in audio cards like E-MU 1616m, 1212m.
