I do, but I want to use something like this to use instead of my current PCI sound card. But that is what has the SPDIF output. Using something like this, will it "bypass" the sound card?

I think you would just use the "digital out" from your sound card if your board does not have an output.

It should be good enough without getting to anal, the signal has to come from somewhere.
The USB models might be better suited for you.

Neither the Muse nor the WM8805/TDA1543 sound particularly good straight out of the box but both can be modded for considerable improvements in transparency. The Muse being the more difficult of the two to mod owing to its PCB - Head-Fi has a long thread.

They're all excellent deals for DIYers who love to mod (like me ). If you're not adverse to hacking up tracks, whipping out capacitors and soldering lots of new grounding wires then they're (in the main) a total steal for the sound you can get for the money. People with more money than time and modding aptitude would be better off looking to finished products.

I'm tempted to try out one of these DAC's. Perhaps a little over $100 but it uses an excellent Wolfson chip...

WM8741 DAC + DIR9001 + CS8421 Coaxial + Optical + USB-gz-1 | eBay

Anyone have any experience with it or seen any reviews?

EDIT: This looks likes the same thing, but the listing has a lot more specs...
