XMOS-based Asynchronous USB to I2S interface

Oh. I saw that the buffalo III costs about 300eur..That is way to much for me to spend on a dac. I think I should go with waveIO v2 + ES9023 subbu dac.

Do I need to only connect them over I2s and that's it or do I need to configure or program something on the boards?

And could I connect maybe a adc for a Mic also to the WaveIO through I2s or is this impossible?

thank you in advance. I am still on time with the subbu dac group buy..

only need to wait for the improved waveIO..

Greetings and happy listening....

Hi, I see that this device has onboard X-tal oscillators being able to provide MCLK for an extrenal DAC;
but my question is, could this device be configured as a slave to an existing performant master clock that is placed near an external DAC so that this external clock provides the 11.2896 Mhz to the board, actually slaving to it the board and the transport (the PC)?
In affirmative case does one need to remove the existing XO from the board and connect the external clock in the same place, or is there a connection pin available and a jumper that could bypass the already mounted XO?
Thanks.

hi there. Tanks For your answer. I can wait a little bit. Is there a releasedate available for the rev2 board?
will it be much more expensive then the current revision?
Hello rondadon! Thing could be confusing here if you are speaking about WaveIO rev2 board so let's put it this way: WaveIO rev2.0 (or WaveIO next revision - without any specific number) will have to wait to show up and as I can see my schedule, I'm strongly sure that it will pass more than "little bit" (no offense!) to show up. SO, let's exclude it for now.
There are two chances for you:
1. is to buy actual WaveIO offer and wait for the daughter card to show up to improve its functionality or
2. wait (hopefully a little bit :) ) for the daughter card to show up and take them as a bundle.
I personally prefer to choose what is *real* so option 1 would be a good start for you. As a side note: you could also add DB to your WaveIO card later on... that's what all peoples from that list are waiting for (- with few exceptions), just need to place your name there to take the benefit of this GB.
Forgot to say: this WaveIO card is for playback only so you cannot add ADCs to it.

And is there any Idea to make the waveIO 6channel compatible? eventually with an extension board? This would be awesome...
No ideas, just plans :)

Thank you for your answer.

So you say that the "next revision" waveIO would be the current board with the daughter board in one "delivery" . So all those who had ordered or who have the current waveIO Board til now will get this daughter board and there will be NO difference to the "next revision" waveIO Board?!

Or are you planing to change something directly on the waveIO board for the next revision?

If there will be no difference between the current version with daughter board and the "next revision" then I think It would be the best to order now!

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards

For the moment WaveIO is sold as is and later on with daughter card when it will be available. This bundle will exist as long as the new WaveIO is in development and will reach end of life after that. There will be some differences between the two WaveIO boards but the output stages will be identical.

Lucian,
Can i use the i2s and the the spidf output at the same time for testing two dacs?
I want to make listening session between a Pass D1 Clone (from Spencer) and my mojo2.
Yes you can, enjoy :)

Thank You for the clarification...

I think I can wait til the end of the year for the new waveIO board (revision 2)! Or will it take much more time to complete the board.
Can you estimate maybe how long it would take til you will have the new board ready?

Are there any plans to make the WaveIO maybe modular expendable with Add-On Boards.
So say if you want more channels or if you want also ADC or something else you could buy a extension board for your wanted purpose and plug it into the WaveIO Master Board.
This is only a idea which had come to my mind which would be really awesome and would fit much more people's need and will also make this board more popular.

Thank you very much for clarification.

I have also a question : I would like to test several PC configuration simultaneously (eg one Linux mpdpup, another Linux Vortexbox, one Windows PC. Is it possible to set a switch in the USB port ?

Similarily, I would like to be able to switch between several PSUs (USB fed, external 1, possibly external 2). Is it possible and without danger to the WaveIO card ? I guess it may be easy for USB pwr/ ext 1 PSU with the power selction header, but maybe more tricky if I want to compare ext 1 PSU and ext 2 PSU.

Has anyone tried powering their WaveIO with a Li-Po 5V battery such as those supplied to charge mobile phones, like this one -

Anker® Astro2 Dual USB Output 8400mAh Backup External: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I would cut off a USB cable to feed theWaveIO screw terminals.

Seems to be a very cheap way of testing it out and plenty of current reserve to power it for a few hours.

Those batteries have charging and step up circuit inside. Noise and not suitable for audio.

Battery Power

Those batteries have charging and step up circuit inside. Noise and not suitable for audio.

Good point.
However, surely if one disconnected the device from the mains when playing the WaveIO with it, the charger circuit would not be energised and therefore would not contribute noise?

Also if using the 5V output, would that involve any step-up device being active?

Do you have a better suggestion for Li-Po battery power that is convenient to use?

Many thanks
Jonathan
