Any good suggestions for an 5.1/7.1 dac?
Can't find any good one's. I would like to have a USB connection on it. |

Well one way I'd suggest is using the exa U2I asynchronous USB interface and an 8 channel Buffalo DAC. This would be fastest way and probably the cheapest also (comparing with some RME audio soundcards or something similar.)

Oh, i believe there would be another option. I had good results with AK4396 DAC from Asashi Kasei. I recall they also provide some multichannel DACs although those might be limited to 96Khz.
Nevertheless, if you DIY a multichannel DAC from AK, you definetly cut some corners on price as compared with the buffalo. Even building four AK4396 would probably bring you at a smaller cost than the buffalo. |

Whithout a 5.1 receiver/decoder, the DAC itself is useless. The USB "connection" won't do that because the cips that are on market are limited on Windows native drivers to USB 1.1 and therefore to 2 channels at 48kHz samplerate/16 bit.
There are a few new models that can do USB 2.0 with proprietary drivers, but I think they can still do only 48kHz/16bit. One that I think of is CM6206. Last edited by SoNic_real_one; 2nd May 2011 at 10:53 AM. |

Let's assume Toslink / SPDIF are also ok. Would that open the possibilities? |
