Hi!
I am looking for not expensive stereo DAC or DAC kit, something about 250-350$. Question is: Is it sound quality of stereo DAC kit (for example this one 2010 UP-SAMPLING 24bit/192Hz DAC DA CONVERTER W/USB KIT 24bit/192Hz DAC DA CONVERTER @ USB Kit [217] - US$95.00 : Hifi Diy--Amplifier,dac kits, hifi audio products and parts online shop, shipping to worldwide cs4398 can be updated to PCM1793,or to pcm1798, or to CS43122) can be the same or even better then DVD (not CD) player quality. I am already have Yamaha DVD-1700 (Cirrus Logic CS4382 (8Ch)), DENON AVS 2807 (Analog Devices AD-1835), and DUNE smart D1. The main source of video and audio signal for now is DUNE connected by HDMI and optical line to Denon. But the sound quality from Yamaha DVD analog output is better. Can you recommend DAC or DAC kit for replacement of Yamaha DVD for the same or even better sound quality? Or it’s a bad idea and the sound quality of equipment that I already have was better than any DAC (DAC kit) below 350$? |

You wanted to say Denon AVR 2807?
The problem is in the Dune media player. Probably it resamples the audio to 44.1/48 kHz (comun fault in Sigma cipsets, not sure for Realtek ones). Internal clock is jittery, not like the one in Yamaha. That fault is commune to all the media players on the market - Sigma or Realtek based. The CS8421 in that DAC won't be able to correct that. And those NE5532 need to go... From what I read, the only chip that might help you with improving the quality of sound coming from a media player is AD1896. Or use a Denon receiver that has AL24 Processing Plus. I have the Denon AVR3805 and it makes a difference on the digital signal from WDTV Live (Sigma cipset too). PS: You can find those DAC cheaper on eBAy directly from the chinese manufacturer (I won't say the name here, you will find it). Last edited by SoNic_real_one; 22nd March 2011 at 08:15 AM. |

Sure AVR
![]() By HDMI Dune produce up to 24/96 kHz stereo. I am not sure about spdif out. I will check it. Some words about jitter. I was suppose that jitter can be eliminated by digital receiver chip(cs8416 or dir9001). Is it wrong? Or this is correct only for usb input? Hm... Dune have also i2s port on back. But i have no idea how i can use them. |

Does it? Then they fix it.
On WDTV Live I was told is still "in works"... WD fixed it just for the WDTV Hub for now. The digital receivers claim that they eliminat ejitter, but the truth is that is just a PLL loop with some filtering. Nothing fancy. The AD1896 has a specialized section dedicated to jitter elimination with some internal FIFO memory. The CS8421 doesn't have that. The AL24 Processing in Denon IMO is better - is done via a dedicated DSP (AD Blackfin SHARC)) and it takes care of the jitter too (only for PCM signals or DSD converted to PCM, not for native DSD) beside the upsampling and dithering. I2S is generally better than SPDIF because eliminates the SPDIF receiver jitter. Basically you could connect that signal right after the receiver cip. It doesn't do anything for the jitter in the system clock (your Dune clock is shared between video and audio via an internal PLL divider). Ok, problem with SPDIF. If i take for example this DAC (DAC AD1955+AD1896 24BIT/96KHz Balance Output HDAM) is it his quality will be better or the same then Yamaha DAC and DENON DAC. Or i can use I2S for connection to the previous DAC.
It's just a theoretical question. Do i need continue my investigation in DACs with price bellow 350$ or must stop it? Theoretically can be DAC for this price better then DVD DAC for 500$ or the receiver DAC for 1000$? If it is not possible and better quality DAC will cost not less then 1000$ I have no question any more . But if its possible I will continue my investigation. P.S. About SPDIF out quality. On the Russian IT forum (Обсуждение статьи iXBT.com: "Сетевой медиаплеер Dune HD Max" [6] - Конференция iXBT.com) one man capture by RMAA(RightMark Audio Analyzer) SPDIF output of DUNE BASE 3.0. He play some WAV files with 16/44.1 and 16/48 bit rates. Then he compare source wav file and captured wav file and find no difference .

In digital domain there all be the same. The fact that the bits have small periodic delay/advance, comparative with the original clock, will be ignored in the digital capture.
You can play the 44.1kHz bits with the speed one bit every minute and still get to the end the "correct" bitcompare. But it won't sound right, no? Only when you go thru analog (DAC) the jitter gets translated in distortion/noise. The only way to eliminate the most of the jitter would be to use the i2s connection (gets rid of the receiver added jitter) and further eliminate the jitter induced in the Sigma cipset with something like AD1896. I didn't have the oportunity to listen to that DAC, but AD1896 has some good reviews. Last edited by SoNic_real_one; 22nd March 2011 at 05:17 PM. |
