Default kinda OT: purchased DAC from China

I recently purchased a DAC from China and just got a bill from Fedex for custom and duty fees for $32.23. Anyone here who bought stuff from China got hit for the same fees from shipping company?

It's not just stuff from China, it's from anywhere outside the EC in the UK.

Here, the post office charge £8.00 handling and whatever duty and taxes are levied.
There's always VAT at 20% but sometimes, Duty is 0%.
The VAT is also levied on the postage cost.

In US is different. The sales tax for internet orders out of each US state is supposed to be declared by individuals at the end of the year.
I never got a custom or duty fee when I did get staff from Honk Kong in the mail.

I bought the Hlly DMK IV preamp/DAC off eBay and did not incur any follow-on customs duty so far...I've had it for about 3 months.

$62 from fedex/US gov from the EU. These big shippers are all international companies, so they must report and follow import laws. If a small package is sent by regular mail, most probably get through without taxation.

Also, just purchased from MCM and noticed that sales tax is only applied for items shipped to about 5 or 6 states, and of course mine is included.

I guess it really depend on shipper and shipping method. I purchased small stuff (SMPS, DIY amp board...) and they shipped directly to me. I forgot who was the shipper but those took about a month to received. This time I got called from Fedex and had to fill out some import declaration form before they released the package. I got the package in about 10 days and it was ship by air.
I want to purchase an amp chassis but now I am reluctant to buy big stuff from China

What annoys me about charges in the uk is the 12GBP fee charged ontop of whatever taxes and duties just for handeling the item. I have had to pay bills of 12.56GBP in the past which is just depresing.

Just paid $28 earlier today for the customs/taxation handling fee for my pair of AN drivers, bought in the US. This was on top of shipping and VAT, and was when using the postal service. The courier companies like UPS and FedEx are no longer an option for mere mortals in these parts, as they are actually expensive when it comes to their fees(!).

Expensive as in I once paid $50 in handling fee for receiving a single book, bought in the US and shipped via FedEx. That was a fair few years ago, and their prices haven't declined since then.

You lot were saying?

Same experience here, but again by US mail, not Fedex or UPS.
