Default Wolfson DAC chips and the SPI Bus

Has anyone attempted or got a clue how to control the Wolfson DAC chips via SPI? I have been reading up on the SPI functions of the WM8716, but the latching function on pin-28 has me completely bowled over. I have never encountered that requirement on the SPI bus before.

Any leads would be most welcome.
