how can it be if it is not even compatible precision wise ? Totally different fixed point format of 5.23 versus 1.15 fixed point formats. Even a 32 bit fixed point DSP is not a substitute. Then you have the issue of it not being pin compatible as well with the recommended replacement being a BGA package !! I think TI is just saving face by trying to fit a square peg in a round hole
Fine for me as long as it's transparent sounding with low jitter. Personally I''m more concern about the software and lack of options in it.
Who said it was obsolete??????? Ti advices their newer chips for new designs, ofcourse they do because they want to sell them!!!!!!
But where is the problem??? Ti will keep manufacturing the TAS and support it, but they only want to promote their newer products for new designs.....

Usually the new chips are backwards compatible with the earlier ones in some way. However the chip TI recommends as a replacement is poles apart from the one it replaces.
As said before by ds23man the Tas3108 is only not recommended for new designs;
TI does not recommend using this part in a new design. This product continues to be in production to support existing customers.
If this IC becomes obsolete, we will make sure we have enough on stock for production.
