Got a prepro receiver you like?

I've been thinking of making the jump to 5.1 or 7.1 - some sort of surround setup. I only listen to music, so I'm not interested in the video side of things at all.

When Circuit City was going out of business last year, I almost bought one of their prepro receivers, but didn't. At the time, they were in the $300 range. But I've been looking online for people's suggestions as to what are good, music oriented receivers - and it seems people basically disregard the cheap mass market units, and instead suggest 'nicer' ones that start at about $1000, and go way up from there.

Is there anyone here running 5.1 or 7.1 receivers that they think are exceptional for music? Anything under $500? Opinions?

I had bought under 500$ an used Denon AVR-3805 and it has an exceptional sound. I am using it paired with a Denon DVD-2930CI via DenonLinkIII - it can carry hi-res surround digital formats, including DSD (SACD). The 3805 can decode HDCD, LPCM, DSD...
People sell those in droves to get the ones with HDMI inputs. Personally I don't care for that.
Before that I was using a Harman Kardon AVR-220. Sounded nice, but in other class... You might find some of their top models too.

PS: I have swaped the original LM811 OpAmps in the DAC section with some LM4562 and I think it improved the sound a little bit.
