Another go @ choosing the right DIY DAC

A pretty good place to start would be all the Chinese DAC products on Ebay. Look at what chips they are using and then use Google to look for reviews and forums discussing the different units that are available. There are complete units you can mod and also boards that need PSUs and cases. I myself have, among others, the upsampling CS4398 board that I use with some high quality trafos so I have xlr outs that feed my Aleph P preamp. The board quality is surprisingly very good. The choices are almost endless. Something with the WM8524 in it might be a good candidate for a single ended approach if you could find one. And do look up the datasheets of the different chips to get familiar with the different topologies.

Check out the Buffalo, pricey but very good, and the K&K are good also.

Good luck and have fun, Bill

@Kevinkr: thank you for the detailled answer. My question is actually triggered by what was brought by gbyleveldt in this thread : http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/148433-opa1632-i-v-vocm.html

I've had this pcm2707-src4192-pcm1798 dac on the side for almost one year now and it's due time I finish it ;) I think I will wire a trimmer in between the rails, buffered by an opa134, in order to adjust the vcom voltage and to get 0V at the inputs.

End of the OT. Sorry guys.

As I've said, I've had good luck with the WM8524 on a board I designed:

Beezar.com - grubDAC

The owner of Beezar decided he liked my board and put it in his store.

I'll be the first to admit that there is a lot more that can be done with the design, but for the size of board and the compromises, it seems to sound good.
