Default PC Dac Measurement

I find it surprising that it one cannot use a PC program to output a digital test signal, square or sine wave, in real time, to the SPDIF or USB input of a dac and then use a PC scope to read the result on the same computer.
Seems it would be a really useful tool to me that plenty of us would use- where are the program writers when you need them?

Why couldn't you simply output a test signal to the correct sound card output and sample with a PC scope at the same time?
