PC as source and SPDIF connection to the external DAC

if I would be using an external DAC and the abovementioned setup, does the quality of the sound card matter?

I have an envy card which has toslink output. But it quality doesn't matter then I might as well use the built-in toslink/coax from the realtek.

It depends on the driver and the computer itself (speed, interrupts, OS).
