Electronic rotary switch

Hello, I am alooking for a schematic for a rotary switch to select by the use of a button the desired input in my preamplifier. It will be more convenient to have 2 buttons, one to increment chosen port and another to decrement it. Up to 8 positions would be fine.

This can be easily done with a microcontroller but I need a more mocrocontroller-free schematic.

Any help will be appreciated.

The simplest would be a CD4017 decade counter, but that only counts in one direction.
If you must have separate up/down buttons, you could use a 74HC192, but its output is in binary format, so you'd need a 4-to-16 line demultiplexer after it, like a 74HC154.
