Advice, How to: Multichannel to Stereo

Hi,

I have taken the habit to have all my digital audio including cable/TV to go through a nice Stereo DAC. I find that it provides a much nicer entertainment experience.
Having a nice stereo set up, I have not invested in multichannel, however I seem to hit a roadblock with the latest ISP/cable TV equipment I received. Indeed that equipment does have a Toslink Spdif output but it always outputs in multi-channel :(
I did a bit of searching and did not find a cheap equipment that would do the down-mixing from multi-channel to 16/44.1-48K Stereo. Has anybody done a project like this? Must I buy a cheap used multi-channel amp/preamp, and will it downmix to a std spdif?
