Default i2s out of a fireface or similar fireware interfaces?

Reading about the Beagleboard on the linux audio thread made me think again about the possibility to mod the RME fireface to get directly an i2s audio stream, instead of the (horrible) spdif.

For my needs it has to be 24/192k and an external firewire device. Alternatives can be the m-audio 2626 and the Mackie 400F.

Other ideas welcome.

I wonder if it's possible such a mod or not...

There will be something, not necessarily I2S, at the input to the dacs.
