MODDING commercial RECEIVER for seperate digital outputs !!

I know that most of you here are all "stereo" addicted


But for some of us, multi-channel for home theater is also a reality.
I've been asking around for now almost 1 year,
( also on avsforum )
about a way to get a stupid surround decoder working
with recent formats , and output seperate channels
in digital domain; without answer/success

i would've seriously thought that some whiz kid on this forum ( i know alot here are some of the most talented electronicians i have read of )
would have find a way to work with a chip, or mod something to allow us to reach our goal

So what is holding back ??
Is it THAT complicated to modify a commercial HT reciever?

i understand about the difficulty to get a surround decoding chip with the required code to be able to decode all the formats

what about ripping off and already loaded chip from a complete receiver??

is it a $$$$ question ?

i don't care to buy a very recent receiver ( hell a brand new one if required ) and rip it in parts to try

Can you imagine what are the possibilities if we could get to output this kind of information ?

could then use a few DCX and get a complete digital surround system

Neway, i hope i am not bugging anyone here
( not the point ) but i am still amazed to have found ZERO references to any attempts from the members of this great community in getting full control over surround signals ..

How do I decode the digital stream from a Toshiba M567 MTS Multi-Channel Chip?

I have found the DIY Audio Forum absolutely helpful and probably
saved my life a couple of times. Break the problem down and
we can each help with our own expertise.

My personal limit is very close to the "nothing" point
i have only expertise in digital audio, as far as i read on this very forum.
So the only help i could bring is asking questions and adding logical thoughts ...

My Question here is very large, i cannot ask about a specific chip or receiver, as it is not the point.

Have you ever heard about someone "hacking" a digital surround receiver?

How would you do it if you add to get decoded digital signal out of the boxes ??

btw, we can chose ANY hardware to start with

price is no object here ...


i've been looking at some of the recent receivers from different companies...there are alot of recievers with the "SHARK" DSP's that can decode HD audio,
could be a good start ...

can we remove a chip from a receiver and it's controller
and reuise it on another board of our fabrication ??

would it be wiser to leave it there and hi-jack it ?
