Default 3.5mm to RJ9 basic connection

Hi everyone I'm new... I want to connect the an aux cord from and MP3 player and wire that into an rj9. I just want one way mono audio going from the aux to rj9. I'm thinking of taking the audio wires from both cords and twisting them together...will this work? Do I need some special circuit for this?

Use two resistors so the two outputs don't fight each other.

Depending on output drive capabilities the resistors could be 100-1000 ohms.

What is your MP3 player?
I don't think I have seen a mono MP3 player before.

Should it work if the audio coming from the player was in mono?
