I am renovating a pair of TL boxes. The new baffles are 19mm MDF.

How important is it to flush mount the drivers in the baffle?

Does it matter what material covers the baffle? In other words, would it make a difference if the material is slightly absorbent, such as felt, or hard and smooth such as veneer?

As Sreten's link explains its very important to flush mount the tweeters.

If your changing existing speaker designs it will effect the sound it was designed for.
Always worth having a go though, get the drivers in the same position as previous baffle.

Hard surfaces tend to be a no go but too much absorbent can be bad too.
Flaring the edges of the baffle should help a lot at least.
Don't forget to chamfer the woofer hole on the inside, seems to allow the woofers too breath. Is the baffle braced?
