Any Heterodyne info..Learner

Hi I would like to learn about heterodyne theory and how it actually works, I know there needs to be non linear components but where exactly everything happens , has my interest.

Im not up on valves but any info and Ill face down and read up.
I was hoping theres a tutorial some where.any leads.
