I just wanted to thank everyone again for the explanations and suggestions on my designs.

I think I'm caught up on grounding now -- or at least, the basic principles. There are plenty of great analogies here, and I hope other beginners out there find this thread, as I've found it is a topic that is often just assumed as understood.

Finally, @mooly, now you've sent me careening off into researching threads of other LM3886 designs. I have found answers, and even more questions, so I will spend some time reading, and try not to be in such a hurry to get a working protoype. It appears AndrewT has answered the same questions at least a dozen times about why "Figure 1" in the National app notes is somewhat incomplete. Even with this simple circuit, I'm still guessing as to what component values are reasonable. The formulas can show you what combinations work in theory, but as always, there are consequences to every choice. I feel I've chosen values that make the math work, but with no regard to practicality. So, it's back to school for me until I have more understanding on what works and why.

I'm in over my head, but hey, it's a great way to learn to swim!
