Tone control: TDA7440 vs PGA2310+AD52xx+OP+Filter

for a new preamp design, i don't want to use potentiometers, as these are the main problem of my actual class-a preamp, built about 20 years ago (and the main reason to build a new one).

my original intention was to:
- select input using relais
- volume control using the PGA2310
- tone control using a standard op circuitry for treble/bass control (op+filter), but replace the 2 potentiometers with AD52xx digital potentiometers from analog devices

would this be a good solution? (i know there are people thinking that tone control is not required)

no i stumbled over a datasheet of the TDA7440.
i never heard of this device before and have no idea if it's really an option for high-end audio.
by looking at the dataseet, i think that it's spec is really not as good as the PGA2310, but when adding tone control to the PGA2310, i think this will add distorsion and will degrade the total spec too...

so i hope that there is an expert who can tell me if i better stay with my original idea (PGA2310 + OP/digipot based filter) or if i better switch to the TDA7440.

lm1036, uses pots but they controll DC voltage to give you balance, tone, and volume controll.
but none of these chips are high audio quality.
