Vaporizing Pads On Cheap China Boards

I'm not shocked about it, but after frying the rectifier on a cheap voltage regulator board off eBay and taking it off, lo and behold, pads disappeared instantly. Back of the board is going to look like spaghetti. I'm using 400F temperature, is it perhaps too high? Is there any way to solder these boards without destroying pads/traces? The bright side is that the fragile traces themselves melt instantly on shorts, providing fuse protection between every device on the board...
