Next AES meetings.

We begin the year with a couple of historical visits.

The first on Tuesday 18th March 2014 7.30 pm

SA Power Museum 31-33 Broughton Avenue, Kurralta Park.

Not surprisingly much of the heavy engineering comes from the assets of ETSA, Adelaide Electric Supply Company and unloved big machines otherwise destined for the scrap heap if bean counters had been allowed to have there way. An admittance charge of $5.00 applies to generate funds in support of the volunters that work there. There is the possibility we could see a 1,000.000 volt arc from the Tesla Coil

There is quite a collection of appliances, from an era when safety was not obessed over as it is today.

History 2 is the Aviation Museum at Port Adelaide, also involving an admission charge.

Not certain if I will be there as I am currently crook, also known as being ill in places outside Oz

August AES meeting in Adelaide

Hi all.
We are going to play a video of Douglas Self discussing active crossover design. It is of a presentation he made at the 2011 Burning Amp Festival in San Francisco.

Of course you could play it yourself, but you may value the synergistic experience of the presence of like minded people. Besides, we could pause the video to elaborate on points made, or to answer questions.

Rod Elliott, on his ESP Web site has an interesting article on the advantages of active crossovers. The bit that I found interesting was that with passive XO's you lose damping control of the drivers near the band edges due to having a parallel resonant circuit in series with the drivers.

7.30 pm, Tuesday, August 19th, 2014
Upstairs room, Directors Hotel
247 Gouger Street

As usual the committee will be having a counter tea downstairs from 6pm. Others are welcome to join us.

Next AES meeting in Adelaide

Hi All, Last meeting certainly had a few glitches. The Directors Hotel had gone into receivership unbeknown to us.

Our Chairman, David Murphy, is going to give a presentation called a "High power horn loaded subwoofer". Krix Loudspeakers had a one off special job in Sydney supplying speakers for a club. The horn mouth of the subwoofer is under a stage and there is manifolding to three 18" 800W drivers resulting in an SPL capability of around 140dB! Something to appeal to our friend at Mylor?

We are trying a new venue, The Elephant and Castle Hotel 179 West Terrace, (cnr Gilbert street)

Meeting, 7.30 pm Tues 16th September.
Upstairs in the venue above.

The committee will be having a counter tea from 6pm and others may care to join us.

October AES meeting in Adelaide

We are going to play a video tutorial on the Psycho-acoustics of phase.
I have not seen the video so cannot comment on it. It is not an AES Tutorial, but the presenter is well qualified to talk on the subject.

Elaphant and Castle Hotel, upstairs room
179 West Terrace (cnr Gilbert St) Adelaide
The Hotel has parking off Gilbert St

7.30 pm Tuesday 21st October 2014

Meanwhile I have been busy making diffusers, using up huge quantities of time and much scrap timber. I now have all the blocks cut out and am glueing them together. The timber is up to 100 years old and should be stable, but I have decided to make the blocks in 8 sections to be screwed to a back board. The final joins between sections will be made with silicone sealer to allow some movement. We have 600 x 600 mm of end grain so even old timber is likely to swell and shrink as the humidity changes.

See you there?

November Adelaide AES meeting

Hi All

We are trying a new venue so take particular note. The AGM will precede the meeting, so being a little late may not matter should you find AGM's boring; although I should mention that our AGM's are among the shortest you are likely to encounter.

We are going to play a video presentation called "Audio Myths- Defining what affects Audio Reproduction" James Johnston is one of the panelists; a guy who combines his knowledge of electronic principles and psycho acoustics very effectively.

The committee are having a counter tea at the Wakefield Hotel, 76 Wakefield St from 6.00pm. Visitors/guests are welcome to join us.

Meeting at St Pauls Creative Centre
Cnr of Flinders and Pulteney Streets, Adelaide
Tuesday 18th November 2014 at 7.30pm

I have my diffusers installed behind the LX521 dipole speakers and really like the result. By diffusing the rear radiation we attenuate reflections from the front wall that may otherwise be perceived as secondary sources adding clutter to the acoustic scene. It sounds simpler and more believable. Well worth a listen. Of course it is rather dipole specific. You often read about diffusers in listening rooms and perceived benefits but the reasons are not explained. To my mind it is all about diffusing/scattering unwanted sounds so that they become decorrelated between the stereo channels. Once decorrelated the brain has nothing to work with to create false phantom sources. It is another tool in the tool kit along with attenuating/absorbing and time delaying but probably more powerful than these.

Hi All

Sorry for not posting any AES meeting info this year.

The next meeting of the Adelaide section will be a presentation by Graham Dicker on the subject of component selection in the audio signal path. It particularly relates to guitar amplifiers, leading one to wonder if there may be some recycling of material he used at the Guitar festival previously.

How to build a better (audio) mousetrap.

September AES meeting in Adelaide

The title on the meeting notice is "PA Shoot out". Maybe more a shoot out of ideas, where the main subject is achieving transient perfection to allow the reproduction of acoustic transients including square waves.

I guess we mostly hear this attribute when listening to headphones or "Full range" speakers, as it is crossover filters that introduce group delay errors that screw up the time domain behaviour. Opinions vary on the audibility of group delay errors, so it will be a rare opportunity to hear, or not hear any differences yourself.

Presenters Peter Morris, Adelaide Sound, and David Murphy, Krix Loudspeakers

October AES meeting

Hi all, after the high end speaker demo last meeting we have something a bit tamer in the form of a video tutorial.

Loudness Issues: Thomas Lund, TC Electronic A/S
We have had a previous tutorial introducing the new loudness measuring systems that are being adopted World wide by the film, television and radio broadcasting industries.
This presentation covers the psycho acoustic/perceptual aspects of loudness and the realisation that not all program types and listening/viewing situations are the same. There is a distinction between creating content and transfering it onto a platform that allows it to reach the listener who may not be in an ideal environment.

Venue, St Pauls Creative Centre
Corner Pultney and Flinders streets, Adelaide
7.30pm Tuesday Oct 20th 2015

The committee are having a counter tea from 6pm at the Wakefield Hotel, 76 Wakefield Street. Others may care to join us.

November AES meeting and AGM

Hi All, Restoring Quad ESL-63 loudspeakers, presented by Graham Dicker is the subject. This will be preceded by the AGM, meaning that if you are inclined to be bored by meetings, being a bit late may be of no consequence! Fortunately AES AGM's rarely last more than 10 to 15 minutes.

Graham has an asociation with the German company that aquired the equipment used to make Quad ESL 57s. He will demonstrate the procedures he employs to restore a typical panel.

7.30 pm, St Pauls Creative Centre
Cnr Flinders and Pultney Streets, Adelaide
Tues 17th November 2015

The AES committee will be having a counter tea from 6pm at the Wakefield Hotel, 76 Wakefield St. Members and guests are welcome to join us.
