Default Head Unit not working on car battery

I have a C9700U Panasonic Tripath head unit that I bought used off eBay. When I hook up the head unit to a SLA 12v battery the unit works flawlessly, but when I hook the unit up to my car battery, the unit makes a click sound every second from the speakers with no audio output. It seems the protection circuit is being activitated in the tripath chip. The unit still turns on with the car battery. I even tried wiring both the negative and positive terminals of the car battery straight to the head unit and I still get the click sound. The battery is also a brand new battery from walmart, and reclean the terminals to make sure I was getting a solid connection. I do not know what the deal is. Could anyone help me with this problem? Thanks a bunch.

The click, click sound is usualy from a short on the speaker outputs. But you didn't mention anything about speakers.

Does the unit actually play from the SLA?

The unit works flawlessly with the SLA battery and no click click sound. I think somehow the negative ground from the car battery is somehow shorting a speaker wire. I will have to look into it more. Somehow the wiring got messed up when I put an aftermarket head unit in, because before the stock unit worked just fine.
