How to get inexpensive case/psu for Charlize & ilk

1. Buy a small, cheap DVD player - 'bout £12, or get a unit with a failed drive.

2. Throw the drive away.

3. You are left with a small case with 12/5v smps.

Trust me, the ones with failed drive units are very plentiful.

I seem to have purchased my share in the last few years.

But this is a superb idea, even if the pwr supply is inadequate.

Therein lies the £12 question.

I was thinking of buying one - on the basis that at that price it must use an smps, and anyway in the UK any decent case, if you can find one, would cost rather more (as would an smps) - when a friend asked me to look at a u/s player. The drive motor is shot, so I won a case & psu.

The unit is rated @ 0.6A 100-240v. Anyhow, a computer DVD player is typically rated 12v 1A, so any psu would be at least useable.

The case of course comes with RCA connectors, s-video, scart, switches, leds, power cable, fuse. The psu has on-board 1A fuse, and looks to have on-board regulation on the 12V line (I have yet to dismantle & examine closely).

A slightly larger box could accomodate a Charlize alongside the DVD unit.

I'll give it a go & let you know.

Just found a label wrapped around an electrolytic - 5V @ 2A, 12V @ 0.2A.

Oh well. Not sure I believe this though - it's a pretty hefty board for such a low rating, so I'll give it a go anyhow.

That doesn't sound like enough.

The low power T-Amps tend to draw 200~300mA average during music. Peak is much more, of course. And mor for 4 ohm loads.

I have a couple of those cheap china made dvd players, looking at the back of the chasis shows 25w power consumption. Thus, with 12v and 5v dc voltage outputs, is it safe to assume that at most it can do 1ampere? Thanks
