Mmmm. They seem quite costy, more than 2 euro for relatively larqe qtys. in Digikey. Having in mind that you need 2 and that you need also a driver for the mosfets (these don't produce enough output current to drive a gate fast enough)... that leads to a quite expensive solution.

From my experience, gate drive transformers cost about that same, but they can drive the mosfets themselves, working very good. In the worst case, your PWM chip may need a buffer to drive the primary.

I wouldn't use them for an SMPS either but I think they would be great for an amp (together with some IXYS drivers for instance).

Keep in mind that an IR2110 for instance was also more than USD 10 when it first appeared.

Any chance the SMPS can be designed to actually get maximum wattage out of the ZAPpulse?

Maybe at a couple of different output impedances. Like have adjustable voltages.
