Hey Folks,
Im trying to Design a Car Amplifier, but I have ran into a problem with the power supply circuit. Seems that finding high Watt transformers which will handle a 20khz signal. in relatively small packages is impossible other than turning my own(dont want to do). Please help, or guide to another design concept. Anyone done a tranformerless high power supply for audio application? Thanks Muddy |

I did a project for a medium power one for a car amplifier by using a charge pump once.

Hi Muddy,
I also have built a switchmode power supply for a car amplifier before. It was 400W at 12V, I wount the toroidal transformer myself. Its supprisingly easy especially if you use a nice large toroid. I think winding one is your best bet, unless you want to pay someone else to wind it for you, however that will get expensive. Peter |

In one of the articles in the Class-D section of the audio\circuits section of www.schematicsforfree.mattsoft.net there are instructions of how to wind a transformer.
Of do what others have done. Go to an amp repair shop and buy a blown up amo they junked. You will get all the hard to find bits you need out of it. After al, the transformers seldom go when the amps die. Just as long as the one you get does not have the transformer burned up, you're fine.
