in the last sentance they mention switch mode-power supplies will come available by hypex.

What is the big advantage of a switch mode power supply over a convetional one?
efficiency?

is it worth waiting for? (I was planning on building sometinh with a UcD180 this christmas)

I bet it won't be cost. Just glad it sounds like it will be an optional supply and not intrinsic.

Usually it's reduced weight and size. Standard raw DC PSU's are rather efficient, power factor aside. SMPS may include PFC, I imagine from past posts their's will, and tight regulation.

Better? Sounds like the opposite for us DIYers...

I dunno, if you want exactly what everyone else has why not just go with OEM in the first place and that way you don't have to plug it in. There'll be other supplies, will take more effort, you'll have to learn a little more... DIY.

I think I understand where you're coming from, but I would suppose the meaning and level of DIY is different for everyone. One person may get enormous satisfaction out of wiring together the "best available" modules into a nice chassis, etc. and leave it at that; while another aspires to design their circuits from the ground up. Is one approach any less rewarding than the other?

BTW, will your UcD modules be up for sale anytime soon?

Hmm, I don't want to think about the dark side of things but... The article says that the UCD technology is licensed from Philips.

A little bit later, Bruno disappears from Philips and ends up at Hypex. I hope this won't lead to the end of that license.

Never mind me, I'm a pessimist

It depends how you view "rewarding" too I suppose. I'm not a SMPS designer and wont' have one on the market anytime soon, rewarding to me would be everything I learn building one, if I ever do, bonus if it actually works, and at least then it will be unique, somewhat.

It seems like adapting an existing one is another option, thank you for that fine work Gertjan.

Bruno's name is on the patent as well as Philips, they own the license as well as they employed him, he didn't lose the rights to it.

Regards,
Chris
