That is an assumption. If one is using USB input this D8 might be better than D802 because of the XMOS USB board. STA328 does not have USB input but that is not an issue as the D8 has the XMOS for that. STA328 being obsolete does not say much. STA326 will be obsolete too. Beware not to buy the PCM2704 version.

If it has something better than the XL2596 (like in the D802) to convert 28V to 12 etc. it might be a good competitor.

Yes it's an assumption. The only info I got for this D8 went from a web shop : one of the guys told me that there isn't much difference between these two units...

But the truth is that I didn't compare them !

Can any owner of the FX Audio D802 share if the amp can take banana clips? They seem very small. Or has anyone upgraded that part of the amp?

yes the D8 is better than the d802 because the regulator is not xl2596 and the power is low noise. The distorsion is better.

Yes it can. I have some quite substantial bananas currently plugged into mine, they look ridiculous compared to the size of the amp though :-)

That D8 looks very interesting. Judging by the pictures the xmos interface is on a daughter board so there might be easy access on the connector for i2s input, there are even a set of solder points next to the sta328 whose labels I can't read but *might* be connection points.

But reading the French forum the v200 upgrade (v400) is not too far away so I think I'll wait a bit and look at that first.

In order to compare the different FDAs-DACAmps or whatever their name, I built a "Magical Box" which is in fact a pad. The purpose was to listen to the outputs of these units directly through a pair of Headphones or IEMs.

A listening through a calibrated professional system with active monitors is paramount to make these comparisons, thus the use of a pad is also a good option.

I used several headphones and a Genelec system (with a pair of 1032A and 1094A subs) for these tests.

Most of the FDAs need an 8 ohm load : a 8.2 ohms and a 0.5 ohm on each channel are a good combination. Moreover, the use of any headphone even several in parallel is perfectly possible ! And the simultaneous usage of the active monitors system is also allowed...

After these tests, the first discover is the perfect silence when there isn't any modulation ! This is the case for all the tested units. The second observation is the very good conversion from digital world to analog, even when compared with very good DACs. Anyway, the V200 seems to be the best of my three units (the two others are the FX-802 and the YJHiFi).

I'll test other units as soon as I find a new one...

Stay tuned !

Agreed, its the reason I've stopped considering off-the-shelf DAC chips for advancing the art of D/A conversion.
