Default Help me choose amps for active system..

Hello chaps.

I am currently speccing a fully active system that I plan to assemble (note not build!) myself.

I have a MiniDSP 2x8 to perform crossover/dsp/preamp duties. This takes its input from my computer and TV in digital and I intend on fitting an analogue input switcher and MM pre-amp to the analogue side.

Currently i am feeding some Mission M62 stand-mounters from the MinDSP out to a Cyrrus integrated amp. I use the MiniDSP as a DAC/volume control and have the volume at about 50% on the integrated amp.

My next step is to add amps to power both the Mission speakers and to power stereo subs. I have peerless XLS 10" drivers and passive radiators which are nominally 8ohm. I will control the volume,cross-over and hopefully do some room EQ with the MiniDSP.

Later I want to add another similar amp to actively cross over the missions and ultimately design and build some nice trans-laminated stand-mounters with nice drivers.

So onto my question:

What amps shall I buy to power this setup?

I have always looked at the HifimeDIY boards as they are so highly praised so I know what I am getting. T3's for subs, adding T2's for the Missions then later another T2 for the two way active plus sub setup.

Recently I have been looking at iraudamp7 type amps. On ebay, a seller: zoe_tsang is selling an "L20D IRS2092 IRAUDAMP7S 200-250W X 2 Class D amplifier" which looks excellent value for money. I would want to run it at enough voltage to get 250 watts into the 8ohm subs. I would then later add two "L15DX2 IRS2092 CLASS D AMPLIFIER IRAUDAMP7S 125W-500W" to power the tweeters and mids. I like the idea of having two bridgeable amps that will make good power into 4ohm. As most tweeters I am looking at are 4ohm, I would simply choose a 4ohm version of a woofer I like (probably Scanspeak Revealator or Discovery series).

Are these IR amps a good choice? I have heard they have low input impedance and may need a buffer stage. Will this be the case running them from the MiniDSP 2x8?

Thank you for any input, it will be greatly appreciated as this is my first proper DIY audio project; hence why I am trying to give myself a modular upgrade path and flexibility.

Hi Jai,

I too am interested in anyone's experience with these amps as I am currently looking to do an active home theater setup and these amps seem to give great power at a nice price point.

Any help anyone can give will be appreciated.

I'm surprised there haven't been more responses.. I think my title was a bit ambiguous. Perhaps it should have said HifimeDIY vs Ljm Ljm irAudAmp7?

Not being defeated, I went out and bought some tools and mdf to start on some basic speakers to get me into the swing of it yesterday. That has eaten some of the budget but will see me through till I can get a clearer idea of what amps to build.

Looking forward to any advice..

Kind regards,

Jai Stanley
