Hello all!
Couple of days of holiday and I already got bored. What to do? A new version of ghettoblaster! My goal is to make new version 2kg lighter and couple of decibels louder than the 2010 years model. Goal specifications: -8kg weight -roughly 99db/W sensitivity, atleast on some frequencies ;D Here's the old blaster which has 2x visaton bg 20 + visaton horn. A mono design. ![]() This time I want a bit military styled look, so it will be edgy and boxy. To cut the weight down from 10kg I'll be using 4mm plywood for the base instead of old versions 9mm thickness. 8" drivers will be updated to 10" fullranges 97dB/W each. First sketch: ![]() Here's a later 3d-render which should visualize my idea of the looks better. It has 4 detachable battery modules, two on both ends. Modules will have battery voltage displays. ![]() BUILDING STARTS: 4mm plywood: ![]() Routing driver holes: ![]() First parts glued: ![]() Bracing: ![]() 75% of woodwork done: ![]() I will keep you updated of the progress, thanks for reading! |

Cool. But are you sure 4mm is enough? I seriously doubt it even without any low frequencies I fear it will resonate like a cajón (a box drum).
To cut weight, you have tried li-ion/lfp batteries first? Or other, neodynium drivers? |

Resonations is my no1. fear too. I'm sure 4mm is enough strengthwise since I have treated all the seams with epoxy from inside. If the box rattles I'll keep adding braces dividing wall areas in halves. Drivers arrived today, they weight only 1,5kg each so that's also a minor weight drop. (total 3kg vs 3.6kg previously)
I'm using nimh battery, considering price I find the lipo weight benefit too small.

Hey Drakmin, I loved the Megablaster design, and I'm stoked to see this build once it's finished. The aesthetics really take your projects to the next level.
I'm curious about your experiences with Megablaster, as well as your intentions with this build. How did you ultimately feel about the sound in Megablaster; was going mono a good decision in the end? Is this new design a stereo build, or are you going mono again? Sealed or ported? Would you mind telling us the specific model of drivers you're using? Love the craftsmanship and photographic documentation of your projects, keep up the good work. |

Pretty COOL! I made something like this way back in the day out of an old 50W car amp 2 8" full ranges housed in an old hard side briefcase. It was fun and pretty dang loud. This was the days when Sony Walkman tape player was state of the art....HAHAH

Beautiful craftsmanship.
Can't wait to see the final blaster. Have you considered using Li-ion batteries instead? A 12V 9800mAh Li-ion battery are like 500g. |
