I don't want to be messing around with preamps and that tbh from what I have gathered so far for the volume control on one of these. Just wondered what value pot I would need for the input of one of these.

As long as you put it before the input cap you can make it as low as the source will allow. Unless the source is a tube preamp or something, 10k would be nice. so it would got pot, then input cap.
