Default Looking into DIY Amps

Hey guys, I am starting to look at diy amps for the first time. What brought me here is because of the fact that I have a VERY high interest in anything involved with home audio and I am soon going to be building a tapped horn subwoofer.

I was first looking at a Behringer a500 as it seems like you can have one of those for a very good price. However, What about building someting just as good or better than the a500 in class d for the same amount?

All I am thinking is a simple design that can do 500w with a on/off switch and a VU meter on the front.

I could do less power but being that it is for a subwoofer I think 500w is a good number. When it comes to building multichannel amps in the future I think my target is going to be more in the 200-250w range.

What do you guys think? can this be done for the same cost of the behringer? If not, how much more would it cost? I am interested in the build of this more than saving money at this point but I also dont want to be bending over backwards to do this....

It seems to me like you have to peice parts together as well and I do not really know all the parts that are needed but I do have a good amount of experience with soldering!

For the $250 you can get the Behringer for you could build something, but it wouldn't be as powerful - 375 watts into 8 ohms at low THD won't be cheap for quality class D. Buy the Behringer. If you really want to learn to build a class D amp read some of the threads on this forum. Nobody is going to help you until you at least read up on what's available and make your questions more specific.

Ok, THanks for the honesty guys. I will just get the BEHringer for now and work on the design and building of the speakers for now. I will reconsider building my own amps in the future.

I have already decided that once I have some High Efficiency speakers built I am goign to build some bottlehead kits to drive them for music. I was just thinking about going the class d route for the hometheater speakers.

I just cmpleted a 250wpc (8 ohm) CLASS D AUDIO kit. It was my first amplifier build from a kit. Its bridgeable to 500 wpc. Total expenses with case and all of the hardware was $500.00. It was very easy to build and sounds great. Take a look at the class d audio website. I think the cheapest you will build a 500 watter will be around 375.00 but its fun to assemble and make the cabinet look how you want.
Before anyone pounces on me ,I have no affiliation with Class D Audio except i purchased one and like it

You can pick up a class d module on the internet.
Add a power supply and away you go.
The module will come with info on what power supply it needs and how to connect it up.
