Question Sure 4*100w SMPS behaviour ..?

I have been very happy with the 4*100watt kit. I built an 8-channel amp using two of these ready-made kit from eBay. At that time I use only 1 SMPS.

Class-D 8-channel amplifier build

In fact I am so happy with the quality that I decided to buy the second SMPS so that each board is powered separately.

Now... this is strange to me. When I had one SMPS only, the fan never turned on and it operaten cold/warm. Tonight I see the fan is on, and that the amp is running hot!

How is the explanation? I thought by adding more SMPS the amp would run cooler... no?

Check that the class D amplifier is getting the same supply voltage as with one SMPS.

Prior to installing the second psu, did you wire both amps in series?

My 4*100w is running on 24v and it does get hot to the point that i added a fan on the hs just to be on the safe side

My multimeter is broken so I cant measure the voltage yet.

Yes before that I power both amp modules with 1 smps. The fan never turned on and never got that hot. Strange now that it does with 2 smps!

Yeah, it could be because each of your amps are running on 24v which has heaps more heat over 12v. Upside is that you get much more power output before audible distortion. Fans could/should be considered

Saw your build thread and it is verrry neat i must say!

Im guessing the SMPS because gainphile's 4*100w doesn't have a fan?

Hmm, the extra heat from both 4*100w's could be heating the SMPS's too?

Helooooo more puzzling...

I played the amps at loud volume, and the amps are very COLD !!

It's only hot when I use it to play at low volume (as in at night).

yes I'm referring to the SMPS fan. The kit does not have fans.

So strange.

Both fans or just the new supply? I have heard of some MeanWells malfunctioning out of the box. Maybe you got a bad one. Change the system back to a single power supply and see what happens with it now.

There are a lot of MeanWell clone's on ebay.
Buying a mean well of ebay is almost no go.
Maby there is a big ripple on the output of the supply you bought.
