Default tk2050 amp in a boombox

Hello, everyone. This is my first post. I am new to the DIY audio thing, but I've spent the last week soaking up as much information on this website as I can. You all are very helpful!

My first project will be a Boom box design. And I think I've finally selected the Hifimediy 2k2050 amplifier board as the heart of the design; the board seems like the right choice, as it should have plenty of Ooomph to power one pair of Alpine car speakers. I am unsure about powering this board in a way that it will be fully portable, i.e. with batteries.

Have you ever heard of someone doing this?
Will this board work?
Any suggestions for powering this board?
Do you have any ideas that will help me?

Thanks, guys

Hey Detrick

You really ought to read Saturnus' thread: The Boominator

It will give you a HUGE amount of info you are looking for and there are extensive discussions on most topics

Yes, the Boominator thread will most deffinately keep you occupied.

I recently made a TK2050 amp for battery power. Instead of using 2 x 12v batteries I used a 12-24v DC-DC inverter. That way I can run of a car cigarette lighter or a single 7aH SLA and keep the battery weight down.

It works very well:

Sure Electronics 2x100W + DigiTech 12-24v DC-DC inverter (laptop PSU)

Hi Detrick,

I have used the tk2050 in a boombox, but this has no portable design. You can have a look at some pictures in my blog: BLOG

Wow. That Boominator is kick ***! Thanks for the tip, Phaedrus.

col, are you using the inverter to charge a 7ah SLA? If you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

eladmi, that is one of the prettiest boxes I've ever seen. Did you mold the plywood? Excellent work.

No, the plywood is veneered. I used a quarter round for the edges. Just a little trick though.

hey eladmi, being a veteran of boombox design/build, do you know of any online resources having to do with wiring the speakers, on/off switches, volume control knobs, etc. Again, I'm totally new to this stuff, so excuse the dumb questions.

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses.

Hi Detrick,

wher do you come from? Many sources I use are in Germany.

Forwiring of the speakers you don't need any online resources. It is very simple. I look for volume control knobs at 8Audio and Ebay. In most of my boomboxes I use SCI switches.

Feel free to ask any questions

No. He's using it to get 24V from a single 12V battery. Remember output power is by laws of physics determined by supply voltage, efficiency and impedance.

So 12V supply voltage, 4 Ohms speakers and 88% efficiency means 16W maximum peak power per channel.

And 24V supply voltage, 4 Ohms speakers and 88% efficiency means 64W maximum peak power per channel.

Remember. It does not matter if the amp package or specs says 15W or 15000W. Laws of physics always overrule marketing statements.

Ok. I understand now. I'm thinking about using a small 12v SLA, like some of you have done. It's affordable. Does your inverter drain the battery faster than it normally would because your producing 24v at the amp?

To answer eladmi's question, I am a Virginian in the USA. I build homes by day, and, thanks to Saturnus' Boominator, I think I'll be a boom-box-builder by night. I'm putting together a materials list, and hope to start working soon.

Also, Saturnus mentions a "switch mode recharger" in a post about his boom box. Can anyone elaborate on what that is?
