Yeah 2-3W of resistor is needed for stable operation, but its easy to do with separate supply and less dangerous if for some reason the zener[or internal zener clamp] fails, then the chip will see near rail voltage.

Sure but then again its about the same work for me to make another secondary and have floating voltage all the time

For me it would mean an extra £10 transformer.
A 7 watt resistor is 60p

Of course if i decide to up the power then a transformer is the only way to go.

I have smps, so there is no problem adding anothe sec... one or 3 more won't hurt
