recomendations for Newbie

I know you probably hate questions like this, but I am just starting out with D-class. I am currently thinking of a 2020 based Amp as a starting place and realise I need to get a preamp also.

Valve sounds good to me.

Any good?



I intend to take a couple of steps here, build a system that works and i learn on. Then start a new one that will meet my needs. IE I am not looking a "great" setup first go.

I found I didn't learn much of anything from the kits I build. Like making a Billy bookcase doesn't teach much about cabinetmaking. (Not trashing the product guys!!!)

I'd strongly recommend going straight to p2p or turretboard, it's more of a headache but also more rewarding and educational. There are lots of amps out there with minimal complexity you can p2p as a first try (so long as you know how to solder just a little bit).

Is p2p point to point - meaning components are hard soldered to the valve socket and lug board?
Turret Board - meaning tinned component stand-offs swagged into a pcb board.

Soldering will not be an issue - for example I do SMT at home with my own Reflow oven.

Right on both counts. Turret board is my weapon of choice, the result is always so pretty. Polycarbonate and turrets can be conveniently sourced here for a reasonable sum without having to buy industrial quantities.

What I do is google say "simple pre-amp schematic" throw in a tube if you have one you fancy, or "pentode" or whatever. Hunt down one I really like and then punch the title of the schematic into diyaudio. You'll invariably find a long and involved thread on the design and can then decide whether to build or not and likely have all the info you need!

This one looks pretty good.

But this one by the venerated Mr. Millet is my pick to build as my main music system preamp. Look how nicely his p2p's is! Thing of beauty that.
